BAND NAME: The High Society (ex-King Adora)/Juliet Sleeps/Red City
GIG DATE: 02.10.06
VENUE: Barfly, Cardiff
REVIEW:
It’s hard to think of many examples where band members form a new band, manage to successfully shake off their origins and become recognised as an entirely new musical entity. ‘The High Society’ are yet another example … well … who can’t be used as an example. The smattering of a crowd in the Cardiff Barfly were there to see King Adora, and I must admit, I was one of them. The collective sighs of disappointment were almost palpable when every opening riff failed to fulfil our sleazy desires of hearing the ‘classics’ - ‘Big Isn’t Beautiful’, ‘Bionic’ or ‘Smoulder’ - played live again. But this band shouldn’t be judged by their past; they still possess the charisma, talent and sexy/cool/iconic front-man Maxi Browne who proves that super-skinny jeans and tattoos weren’t just for the Manics and their fans in the ‘90’s. They have the talent and ability to combine guitar heavy pop sounds with an energetic glitzy glam rock sensibility which makes you think they could be something special. Again.
